Towing vs. flatbed — what's the difference?

Towing (Abschleppen)

Towing means pulling a car with another vehicle using a rope or bar. This method is used over short distances and only under specific conditions.

When towing is OK:

✓ Emergency push off the road
✓ Car with a manual gearbox

Note: Cars with automatic gearboxes, 4x4s, electrics and accident vehicles CANNOT be towed normally — risk of damage to the gearbox and drivetrain.

Flatbed (Autotransporter)

A flatbed is a platform on which the car stands safely during transport. All wheels are immobilised, eliminating the risk of mechanical damage. It's the best option in the vast majority of situations.

When a flatbed is required:

Towing procedure in Switzerland

Position the car safely

Turn on your hazard lights immediately. If you can, pull onto the Pannenstreifen (hard shoulder) on the right side of the road. Never stop in the middle of the road — safety comes first.

Vest and triangle

Put on a high-visibility vest before getting out of the car — mandatory in Switzerland. Place the warning triangle: at least 50 m behind the car on regular roads, at least 100 m on motorways.

Wait behind the barrier

Rules

Rules on the Swiss motorway

Switzerland enforces traffic rules very strictly. Not knowing the rules is not treated as a mitigating circumstance — fines can be severe.

Hard shoulder (Pannenstreifen) and the "emergency corridor"

In a traffic jam on motorways A1, A3, A4, drivers are required to form an emergency corridor (Rettungsgasse) — the left lane moves as far left as possible, the rest as far right as possible. Blocking the hard shoulder or failing to form the corridor carries a fine from CHF 200 upwards, and if it hinders a rescue operation — significantly more.

Towing on the motorway — authorisation

Towing on a Swiss motorway may only be performed by a company with the appropriate authorisation and insurance. Sofia Automobile meets all the required conditions. Don't try to tow a car on the motorway with the help of friends — it risks a fine and civil liability.

Warning triangle and vest — mandatory

Not having a warning triangle or a high-visibility vest carries a fine. Make sure you always have both items in the car — especially in winter, when it gets dark early. In Switzerland, the vest is put on before getting out of the vehicle.
